I'm breaking out one of my favorite Those Nature People products today: Severe Dry Skin Salve!
Why does our skin get so yucky the closer we get to winter? Our hands, feet, and face feel uncomfortable, itchy, and eventually start to flake and crack. Some people even have eczema flare-up. Skin dryness is caused by a lack of water in the top-most layer of your skin, and things like eczema are caused by skin inflammation. In addition, the older you get, the less natural oils you have in your skin to protect it from drying out! Why do people suffer with these skin problems more in the winter?
Well, your skin starts drying out as soon as you turn the heat on in your home. No matter what way you heat your home, the dry, hot air that is circulated affects that top layer of your skin, reducing the natural oils and water in the tissue that helps the body hold on to moisture. Long, hot showers and baths do the same thing to the skin, stripping it of its natural, protective oils. We bundle up in layers of tight clothes, which cause cause irritate dry skin, and also create bacteria-filled perspiration, which is a recipe for skin inflammation.
Your skin becomes vulnerable as soon as the weather turns colder and we turn on the heat and pack on the clothes. As your skin becomes more dry over time, is might start to peel and crack: This leaves it more exposed to harmful chemicals and bacteria, leading to inflammation and irritation. It's a tough battle to fight through the winter! The best way to avoid that nasty try skin is proper care early, and to continue that through the winter! We have some awesome tips for you below!
Hydrate and Stay Healthy!
The first thing you can do is stay hydrated! Make sure you are drinking plenty of water throughout the stay. This will help your body not only maintain the right amount of fluids, but also stay healthy. Often, our skin is an indicator of what's going on inside the body. Keeping the immune system healthy and avoiding the flu will help your skin more than you realize! Drink lot's of water, make sure you are eating healthy, and take precautions to ward off bacteria and viruses. A good way to do this is to use our Crook's Oil blend of essential oils in a diffuser, as soap, antibacterial spray, or any other way you can! Crooks Oil has a 99% kill rate against airborne bacteria when diffused. Read all about how to use that oil here!
De-Stress and Sleep!
Reducing stress is also very important, because when we are anxious, our skin actually has a harder time maintaining moisture. The holidays are a perfect time to encounter allllll sorts of stressors: to-do lists, endless things to buy and bake, trying to make every day perfect and make every person feel special.... it's too much! We do too much during the holidays, and our bodies pay for it. Unfortunately, it is hard to make some of those stressors go away, but what we CAN do is make sure we are getting enough sleep, that we are taking time to exercise be outside, and that if our body needs it, we are giving it a bit of extra support! We suggest some awesome essential oils and herbs to combat stress here and here!
Moisturize!
And of course, back to my favorite salve! Moisturizing is obviously super important during the winter... but there IS a way to do this wrong. Let's start with when it is best to moisturize: Right after showering or bathing. You skin is clean and the pores are open, which makes it the perfect time. But remember that very hot water and long bathing is BAD for the skin; limit yourself to a shorter, lukewarm shower, and then follow with strategic moisturizing!
What products to use? To begin, don't just pick up any bottle of lotion at the grocery store. Those modern products are often filled with unnatural ingredients, chemicals, and fragrances that irritate the skin, clog the pores, and even dry the skin out! This is NOT what we need when trying to keep the skin happy! Instead, visit your favorite nature people :) <3 We have great products, all natural and made here in our store, nothing added that will make your skin sad. We have a variety of lotions and butters available in lots of different scents on our website-these are great for everyday moisturizing!
But perhaps you want something that is going to target problem area, like hands, feet, elbows, and knees. Maybe you are already struggling with dry skin, eczema, or flaky scalp, and you need help with those things now! We have got some great stuff for you!
